2010 Student Safety Poster of the Year Voting
There will not be a guest speaker during the February meeting . The meeting will consist of reviewing and selecting the 2010 Student Safety Poster of the Year and runner ups. Wicomico County School administration will be joining us with the selection process.

Eligibility
Nominees must be a Professional Member or Member of the Society, and not have received this award within the past five (5) years (U.S. members must be active dues-paying members of a Chapter).
Nominees cannot be running opposed for national ASSE Executive Committee office or currently serving on the national Technical and Professional Recognition Committee.
Judging Criteria
Only the nominee's past five (5) years of activities will be considered.
Award and Presentation
The winner receives a a handsome engraved statuette for display in home or office. Presentation is at the annual Delmarva Safety Association’s Annual; Seminar & Expo’s Award Luncheon which is held in March each year.
Nominating Procedures
Petitions must be submitted in writing to the DMV SPY Award Chair (Mike Tull – mike.tull@pbvllc.com) - postmarked no later than Feb.26th, 2010 to be considered that same year..
The nominee's entire submission should include the following items:
Technical Aspects: Consider demonstration of technical expertise on the job. This area should be specific, detailing actual activity
Operational Aspects: Consider ability to work within company structure to provide a safe working environment and develop effective safety programs. Consider the effects that safety programs have on the operational aspect of the industry.
Society: Consider office held, responsibility, contributions, and years of service and willingness to volunteer.
Regional and Area: Consider the office held, responsibility, contributions, and years of service
Chapter or Division: Consider officers held, responsibility contributions and years of service
Authorship: Articles or books published the last five years dealing with safety or health
Public/Community Service: Consider the involvement in the community and contributions made during the time of service.
Academia-Degrees/Univ. Activities and Certifications Codes, Standards & Legislation: Consider involvement in developing codes, standards or legislation.
Honors: Consider type of award, accomplishments required to obtain the award.
Innovations, Inventions & Improvements: Consider type of innovations or inventions, improvements, patients, their impact, results on the business/profession.
Leadership: Consider the candidate's area of responsibility, promotions and advancements, leadership/accomplishments shown in the company structure, ASSE, or community activities. Look for ability to accomplish goals through others
Program Development: Consider the ability to develop, administer, and implement safety and health programs and the benefits derived.
Management/Motivation: Consider the ability to motivate others in safety and health programs as well as society and community programs. How motivation was accomplished and its effect on the program's efficiency and results.

This is our second year sponsoring a local poster contest leading into the national ASSE contest, which is in its eighth year. We believe this is an excellent opportunity to showcase our children’s vision of how workplace safety. We hope that the students of Wicomico County will use their creativity to illustrate an example of Safety-on-the-Job. The students will ask their parents and other adult role models about the hazards that are present in their workplaces and the ways those hazards are being addressed. We will pick local winners, award prizes, and submit all posters into the national contest. We will all win as the students emphasize the importance of Safety-on-the-Job!
Contest is open to all Wicomico County elementary school students, aged 5 to 14. The Delmarva Chapter will sponsor all posters for entry into the national contest.
The Delmarva Chapter is providing PRIZES for Wicomico County Students:
Posters must follow the national Poster Contest Rules, including relating to the Safety-on-the-Job theme, size being no larger than 11”x14”, free-hand originals using crayons, magic markers, or color pencils only, with completed Entry Form.
Posters with completed Entry Forms are due to Ms. Susan Jones, Director of Elementary Education at the Wicomico County Board of Education by Friday January 29, 2010.
Judging will be conducted by the Board of Directors of the Delmarva Chapter of ASSE plus Wicomico County Board of Education representatives at the February 3, 2010 ASSE Chapter Meeting at the new training facility of Safety Resources, LLC located at 1938 Windsor Drive in the Northwood Industrial Park, Salisbury, MD.
Winners will be announced that week in a joint press release that the Chapter will coordinate with the Board of Education and local media outlets.
All posters will be submitted by the Chapter into the ASSE national contest with prized up to $1,000 savings bond. Shipping will be arranged by the Chapter.
Copies of the winning posters will also be displayed at the Chapter’s booth at the Delmarva Safety Association (DSA) Expo in Ocean City in March 2010.

Drive Safely to Work
Across the country, employers are taking part in the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety’s annual campaign Drive Safely to Work Week. Here in Delaware, OHS works with state agencies to bring you the most up to date traffic safety information each and every month. This month, we are focused on Driving Defensively.

Every single time you take your eyes or your focus off of the road, you are putting your life and the lives of others in danger. MOSH Outreach Program presents FREE Safety and Health Educational Seminars for Employees and Employers throughout Maryland for January-June 2010.
Employers and employees across Maryland can utilize Maryland Occupational Safety and Health’s (MOSH) free educational program. Our educational program is designed to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses through education. Participants can enroll in half-day and full-day training seminars at no cost. These free seminars provide an overview of the specific topic and how to comply with applicable OSHA/MOSH standards. Attendance at these sessions does not substitute for training required by OSHA/MOSH standards.
