9:00 – 10:30 am How Leadership is Radically Changing:10 Implication for Safety Professionals

Whether a consultant, a manager, involved in training, or another type of practice specialist, knowing the new insights and shifting direction of leadership can enable you to become more effective at influencing others. Dr. DePaul will explain some of the harmful traditional leadership assumptions to avoid and even explain the critical difference between “process” and “practice.” He’ll share how to effectively develop your own leadership and what to avoid doing.

Speaker

Gary A. DePaul has two decades of experience as a manager and scholar of management, has worked as a manager in fortune 500 companies, and consults with organizations to improve leadership practices. He is the author of Nine Practices of 21st Century Leadership: A Guide to Inspiring Creativity, Innovation and Engagement, published by CRC Press. In February 2017 he published The Most Effective and Responsible Clinical Training Techniques in Medicine: Alternative Types of Learning in Clinical Specialty-Interest Areas of Family-Practice Medicine (Second Edition). Gary has worked for Arthur Andersen, Johnson Controls, Fidelity Information Services (FIS) Global / Certegy, Ceridian, and Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has a Ph.D. and Ed.M. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign through the Department of Educational Organization and Leadership. He has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Gary presents on leadership to companies, firms, and nonprofits.

To be effective and efficient, leaders must have a solid understanding of how their emotions and actions affect the people around them. Research shows that the better a leader relates to and works with others, the more successful he or she will be. Tony Casas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Roberts Wesleyan College and a Master of Divinity degree from Northeastern Seminary. He was born in Mexico and has lived in CA,

NY, MD and now in NC. He prioritizes serving his local community in various leadership capacities. Currently, Tony is a Health Educator for Jóvenes Sabios (Wise Guys), a healthy masculinity-male responsibility program focusing on Latino males of all ages with CHS of NC. He’s also a Certified Corporate Chaplain with Corporate Chaplains of America providing professional employee care to various companies in the Triad. Additionally, he is an Independent Certified Coach, Teacher and Speaker with The John Maxwell Team. Tony is proud to be serving as a leadership development coach at UNCG within the Office of Leadership and Service Learning. He also serves on official boards of the Latino Community Coalition of Guilford, The Greensboro Fellows and Christians in the Marketplace

Don’t let fear or discomfort hold you hostage. Learn to conquer nervousness and make stress and anxiety a thing of the past. This presentation will focus on three simple questions about confident public speaking: the WHAT, the WHY, and the HOW. In this session, Pat will engage you in an experience of discovery to find and ignite your speaking power. You will learn: What is a confident speaker? Why confident speaking is essential to your career and personal life. How to make the leap from “F to A” level speaking (from Fear to Assured).

Pat B. Freeman is a John Maxwell certified speaker, trainer, and coach. She offers women’s empowerment and vision- building keynote speaking, seminars, and workshops. Pat has more than 20 years as a college administrator where she oversaw over 125 faculty and staff—and nearly 3,500 students annually. She is also an author, radio host, and serial entrepreneur. Pat is passionate about empowering women and others to move from “stuck to clarity” in areas of leadership and career growth. Her goal is to inspire you to have a successful and fulfilled life by doing what you love and stepping out to achieve your Big Dreams. Pat’s big goal this year is the EMPOWER 7000 project. She is on a mission to inspire & empower 7000 women and girls in 2017 in her FROM Inspration-to-ACTion Tour. Pat holds a Master’s degree from Campbell University and a Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University. She is also the president of the NAPW Greensboro Chapter – National Association of Professional Women.

2:45 – 4:15 pm Improving Performance in the Workplace: Selecting and Implementing Performance Interventions

The purposed of this session is to introduce safety professionals to the field of human and organizational performance improvement – the science and art of improving people, processes, performance, organizations, and ultimately society. Performance improvement is a systematic process that links organizational and business goals and strategies with the workforce responsible for achieving the goals. We will present performance improvement as a science showing how analytical processes and methods are the bases for selecting and implementing solutions, known as performance improvement interventions. We will also present performance improvement as an art, demonstrating how innovation, creativity, and human psychology can help us understand the complexity of performance challenges.

Speaker

Ronald Graves has over 30 years of experience in business consulting with 20 of those years being in leadership positions. He has consulted for organizations in healthcare, manufacturing, staffing, food processing, logistics, construction, transportation, and food service. He has also worked with many public sector employers including cities, counties and school districts. Ronald has spent the past 8 years building on his organizational performance expertise through the study of business innovation and creativity as well as human performance improvement. He now consults from the intersection of these three distinct but interrelated disciplines. During this time he added the designations of Certified Performance Technologist and Certified Coach, Teacher, and Speaker to his 25-year Certified Safety Professional designation. He is also the host of the weekly radio show, Coaching for Real, on Voiceamerica Business Network.
